Who knew pop could be so cool?

WE8 (West/East 8) was an artistic and cultural exchange that brought together eight artists from the East with eight musicians from the West to interpret questions such as: What opens your heart? What does good fortune look like? What makes you smile? How do you live in harmony with the environment? The results were eight, special-edition bottles and eight original songs, all included in a eight-city world tour ending in Beijing on August 8, 2008.

When two artists are asked to interpret the same question creatively the result can be so diverse based on their own personal aesthetic, experiences, and ideas. Linking the two idea together could then add another level of interest to the end product.

This project demonstrates the merging of cultural differences to come up with something that is visually interesting while also adding another element of Aesthetically, the package design has a strong look typically found in Eastern design. I haven’t heard the accompanying songs but I wonder if these are a contrast to the Asian feel or if the two create any form of synergy.

This makes me ask: What impact can the arts have socially on two different groups of people? And what other types of similar projects could we benefit from on a small and large scale?

Be sure to check out the Coca-Cola website. You can "Design the World a Coke" and view the work of other artists. Pretty cool.
